Jon K. Newton
Jon K. Newton is the Dean of Postgraduate Studies and Head of Research at Harvest Bible College. He has been a full-time faculty member since 2009, having moved to Harvest from Tabor College NSW.
He was born in Belmore, a suburb of Sydney, in 1949, and grew up in Nelson Bay, NSW, before going to boarding school at Barker College, Hornsby. After graduating from the University of Sydney (BA and Dip.Ed. 1966-69), majoring in English and Philosophy, Jon taught in high schools in Papua New Guinea between 1970 and 1974 before attending Faith Bible College in New Zealand. He subsequently relocated to Newcastle, NSW and served as the Principal of Newcastle Christian Life Academy (1979-1987), with one year out as a missionary in Goroka, PNG. He and his wife then planted the first Pentecostal church in Morisset, NSW (1988-1994). During their time there, Jon resumed his theological study by distance with a BA (Hons) from ICI University (now Global University in Springfield, MO.)
Subsequently, during his ten years (1995-2004) on the staff of Lighthouse Christian Church and College, in Keysborough, a suburb of Melbourne, Jon studied for his MA (Theol) at Bible College of Victoria (Australian College of Theology) and then completed a PhD with Deakin University, submitting a thesis on Postmodernism, Christianity and the Book of Revelation (doctorate conferred 2007). His articles on biblical and theological topics have been widely published in academic journals such as Australian Biblical Review, Journal of Pentecostal Theology, Colloquium, JEPTA and Heythrop Journal. In 2009, his first book entitled Revelation Reclaimed: The Use and Misuse of the Apocalypse was published by Paternoster Press (UK), and in 2013 he edited a book of essays entitled New Frontiers : Redefining Christian Ministry in 21st Century Contexts”. His latest book The Revelation Worldview: Apocalyptic Thinking in a Postmodern World was published by Wipf and Stock in 2015.
He has ministered in churches and colleges in Myanmar, India, Thailand, Philippines, Sri Lanka, Ethiopia, France, the Czech Republic and Denmark. He is an ordained minister with Australian Christian Churchesand a member of the Fellowship for Biblical Studies, Society of Biblical Literature, Society for Pentecostal Studies and British and Irish Association for Practical Theology. He currently serves on the council of ANZATS (Australian and New Zealand Association of Theological Schools).
He and his wife Judy live in Melbourne, Australia and are currently the senior leaders at Oasis Church in the Bayside area of Melbourne. They have five adult children. Jon’s research interests include Revelation, Christian worldview, apologetics and contemporary prophecy. Other interests include both Rugby codes (Jon follows the Newcastle Knights in NRL and the Melbourne Rebels in Super 15 rugby), classical music and coffee.
