Dr Paul Knapman
Dr Paul Knapman has been for the Westminster Coroner’s Court since 1980 and was made Deputy Lord Lieutenant of Greater London in 2008.
Early Life
Dr. Paul Knapman went to Epsom College, Surrey; , London and St George’s Hospital Medical School, London, where he qualified as a doctor - MB,BS . He then proceeded to read for the Bar at the Council of Legal Education, and was called to the Bar as a barrister in 1972.
Career
After a few years as a doctor, he became Deputy Coroner for Westminster (Inner West London), serving in this position between 1975 and 1980.
Honours
* Two medicolegal diplomas, namely DMJ in 1975 and FFLM in 2005.
* Made FRCP (Honoris Causa) in 1997
* FRCS (Honoris Causa) in 1995.
* President of the Coroner’s Society in 2009
* President of the Clinical Forensic and Legal section of The Royal Society of Medicine 1995-1997
* Master of the Society of Apothecaries 2006 - 2007
* present Chairman of Trustees, Coroners Court Support Service
Notable Cases
Since his appointment as H.M Coroner for Inner West London at Westminster, he has had a number of notable cases:
* The Iranian Embassy Siege in 1980
* The Libyan Embassy Siege in 1984
* The Clapham Rail Disaster in 1987
* The Marchioness disaster in 1988
* The Ladbroke Grove Rail Disaster in 1999
* The 7/7 London bombings (Lead Coroner) in 2005
He has also presided over 10 other fatal bombings and approximately 500 murders.
