2025 San Diego earthquake
The 2025 San Diego earthquake occurred at 10:08 AM Pacific Standard Time on Monday, April 14, 2025, near San Diego with a recorded magnitude of 5.2. The epicenter was 2.49 miles south of Julian, California.
Roughly two hours after the tremor, City of San Diego spokesperson Perette Godwin told the BBC that no injuries or structural damage had been reported. The San Diego County Sheriff's Department also confirmed that, at that time, there were no reports of significant damage or injuries, though it noted the situation was still unfolding.
California Governor Gavin Newsom’s office stated on X that he had received a briefing shortly after the event.
Following the main quake, the USGS continued to record smaller aftershocks in the region throughout the next hour.
The National Weather Service confirmed there was no tsunami threat.
Before the quake hit, the USGS sent out emergency alerts to residents — including those as far away as Los Angeles — urging them to take immediate protective action: "Drop, cover, hold on. Protect yourself."
During the earthquake, elephants at the San Diego Zoo were observed forming an "alert circle".
