Sock Monkey Ministries
Sock Monkey Ministries is a non-profit organization that assembles and distributes sock monkeys for charitable causes. The Ministry is a participant in the United States Department of Defense America Supports You program.
Mission
The main goal of the ministry is to bring joy and happiness through the giving of a sock monkey to people who need it like orphans and children with sever illness. In line with America's War on Terror campaign, the ministry gave sock monkeys to American military service personnel to show appreciation and gratitude for their sacrifices made in the service for their country.
The ministry, which involves multiple churches and organizations in the USA, delivers sock monkeys to cancer patients, children in Iraq and Afghanistan, those with Down Syndrome, the homeless, and US armed service personnel.
Founding
The Ministry was started by Beth VanSickle, at a time when she was suffering from breast cancer, at Christ United Methodist Church in Sugarland, Texas in January 2005 It began as a Sunday School project for first and second graders, and has grown to a ministry with hundreds of volunteers.<ref name=military/>
By October of the same year, the program had expanded to include 36 adult members of the church, more than 500 local elementary school students, and some college students and members of other churches.
