Red Tape as a Service
rTaaS or TaaS for short, is an acronym for (red)Tape As A Service and is a quickly evolving information technology term used to describe the tendency of IT Service Providers or internal IT Departments inside of larger organizations to implement even more red tape (see :Red_Tape), when implementing the key features of the ITIL standards of the Service Catalog, and a consolidated business process workflow system.
Background
The term "rTaaS" or (red)Tape as a Service, can be described as a play on the popular cloud computing industry terms , , , and .
Instead of using the opportunity to streamline the processes as they are consolidated and documented, the newly found ability to easily insert even more processes and checks, and required approvals, into the business process workflow becomes irresistible to many. A common definition of Red Tape is the "collection or sequence of forms and procedures required to gain bureaucratic approval for something, especially when oppressively complex and time-consuming" which is very similar to the rTaaS phenomena.
In many cases, the actual undocumented and unconsolidated processes were actually more efficient, easier to use and produced more output in shorter time frames than the new "automated" processes in the central workflow system.
This phenomena has often been seen with large organizations which migrate all of their various processes to a single enterprise class business processes management tool such as Appian BPM (http://www.appian.com/).
Origin
The term was first originated by four IT professionals during a discussion over dinner one evening in a suburb of New Jersey in Spring 2012.
