"The Fight for Little Saigon in San Jose"

The recent decision by the San Jose City Council to name a strip of businesses along Story Road, “Saigon Business District” in direct opposition of popular calls for “Little Saigon” have incensed many in the Vietnamese American community of Northern California. City councilwoman Madison Nguyen, who proposed the name change in opposition of community support, has been asked to step down by many in the local Vietnamese American community. Recent media accounts of the issue have largely sought to gain the perspective of community members present at the rallies pushing for a City Council decision reversal.

COMMITTEE FOR LITTLE SAIGON
Resolution

Based on the opinion of the majority of the attendees of the Vietnamese Community General Meeting, organized by the Committee for Little Saigon on Sunday, September 23rd, 2007 at Yerba Buena High School in the City of San Jose, California, who have selected the name Little Saigon as their choice for the proposed business district on Story Road,
Whereas the name Little Saigon symbolizes and identifies the Vietnamese refugee communities in the United States and other countries throughout the free world,
Whereas the name Little Saigon has been officially recognized by numerous cities, counties and states throughout the United States, in tandem with Yellow Flag Resolutions, where high concentrations of Vietnamese refugees reside and do business,
Whereas any name other than Little Saigon does not represent the genuine character of freedom-loving Vietnamese refugees overseas who yearn for democracy for Vietnam,
Therefore, we humbly request that the San Jose City Council favorably consider the meaningful name of Little Saigon for the business district on Story Road, to satisfy the wishes of the majority of the Vietnamese-American residents in San Jose, the Vietnamese-American Community having greatly contributed to the wealth and development of the City of San Jose.
