Laurie Patton (Australian executive)

Laurie Patton is an Australian public interest advocacy and communications practitioner, social commentator, and a former journalist and media executive. He is currently Vice-President of the Telecommunications Society of Australia (TelSoc).
Career
Now active in the non-profit sector Patton is a former CEO / Executive Director of Internet Australia, the peak body representing the interests of Internet users and a chapter of the global Internet Society, where he initiated an ongoing campaign for #BetterBroadband.
Shortly after joining Internet Australia Patton told a parliamentary inquiry the drafting of the controversial Date Retention Act () was "a monumental stuff-up" and “fundamentally flawed”. He subsequently commented on matters such as digital literacy, broadband policy, and the media.
Patton is a former executive at the Seven Network.
Patton has held for-profit and non-profit board roles, including at the National Heart Foundation of Australia and the NSW Film & Television Office (now Screen NSW). As deputy chair of the FTO he initiated and led the first official Australian delegation to the Shanghai International Film Festival.
He was a member of an expert panel for a review of the Indigenous broadcasting and media sector for the Australian Government.
Since joining TelSoc Patton has continued to campaign for repair of the National Broadband Network (NBN) and has advocated the allocation of government Coronavirus stimulous funding for the employment of retrenched workers to be deployed to upgrade the NBN.
