June Canavan
Dr. June Canavan (died 11 August 2009) was an Australian physician, sports medicine specialist, activist and athlete from Queensland's Sunshine Coast. She climbed mountains and walked the Kokoda Track, Papua New Guinea in order to raise money for an African school, St. Jude's, Tanzania, which provides a free education to more than 1000 children.
She launched her campaign with a walk up Kiel Mountain. She tackled Mount Kosciusko (the highest mountain on mainland Australia) twice, as well as a trek up Malaysia's highest peak, Mount Kinabalu in May 2009. Mount Kilimanjaro was reportedly scheduled for October 2009.
Heart surgery
Dr. Canavan had undergone heart surgery four years before her death for a congenital condition discovered while mountaineering in Patagonia in 2004.
“Even if you've had open heart surgery, you can be fitter than you've ever been if you train properly … I feel better than I've ever felt, even though I've been fit all my life”.
Death
June Canavan died, aged 59, on 11 August 2009, in Papua New Guinea after a plane crash near the Kokoda track. She was among nine Australians on the plane that crashed in rugged terrain near the Kokoda Track on 11 August 2009. The plane was found in Papua New Guinea's Owen Stanley Range the next day, 12 August 2009.
