Astrid Gynnild

Astrid Gynnild (born in Røros) is a Norwegian writer, educator, and a professor of media studies at the Department of Information and Media Studies, University of Bergen, Norway. Her research projects lie at the intersection of human creativity, journalism innovation, and new technologies.  She is also engaged in explorative teaching and learning approaches in higher education, and spends much time supervising students at all levels. Her research has contributed to innovative approaches to conceptual development in media research.
Education
Gynnild received her Ph.D. in media studies from the University of Bergen in 2006, with a grounded theory on creative and productive dimensions of journalism work processes. She received her MA in Nordic languages from the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU), with minors in social science, social economy, and German.
Academic career
From 2016 to 2021 she led the transdiciplinary research project ViSmedia (Responsible Adoption of Visual Surveillance Technologies in the News Media), funded by the Norwegian Research Council. Her international team explored social implications of evolving technologies such as smart phones, camera drones, 360 cameras, social media platforms, algorithms and automation. The project was carried out within a , an EU based framework for anticipating long-term consequences of new technologies in society.
Gynnild also led the development and implementation of the investigative journalism program at Media City Bergen. 2014-2019. In 2019 she was awarded the title Excellent Teaching Practitioner (ETP) as one of the first at the University of Bergen.
In 2011-2012, Gynnild was a visiting research scholar at University of California, Berkeley, doing a post-doctoral project on visual storytelling online. From 2012-2014 she held a position as a professor of journalism at the University of Stavanger and was also engaged as a professor II at the University of Bergen.  She served as an editor of the non-profit journal GGrounded Theory Review 2012-2018, and is a fellow of ThThe Grounded Theory Institute 
Before she started her academic career in 2002, Gynnild was a journalist, photo/graphics editor, and newsroom developer in Adresseavisen in Trondheim, one of Norway's largest newspapers. She also taught at the Volda University-College and Oslo Metropolitan University.
