Print E-mail
is a fictional character from the created by Akira Toriyama. Goten is the second and final child of Son Goku, the series' protagonist. His first appearance in the series is during the Majin Buu Saga. While being half-human, Goten is also half-Saiyan.

Creation and conception

Appearance
Goten's appearance at the start of the series is very similar to that of his father, Goku. This shows greatly in Goten's hair style, which is identical in shape and color to his father's. Goten also wears a gi similar to that of his father's, except with long navy sleeves instead of his father's short ones. At the end of the Majin Buu Saga, Goten takes on a different appearance which series creator Akira Toriyama explains was made because he didn't want Goten to be confused with his father. This new appearance included a shirt that said "Son Goten" and a long shaggy hairstyle. Goten is soon trained by his older brother Son Gohan in preparation for the 25th World Martial Arts Tournament, which Goten's father, Goku would be attending (Goku had died before Goten was born and was able to join the tournament due to his many heroic deeds in life). During the training, Goten was revealed to be able to become a Super Saiyan. During the tournament, Goten easily breezes through the kids division of the Tenkaichi Budokai, until he is beaten by Trunks, Goten's best friend and the son of Vegeta.

Later, Goten, along with Trunks, watches as the villain Majin Buu fights Vegeta. Goten and Trunks attempt to assist a beaten Vegeta but are knocked out by Vegeta and taken away by Piccolo before Vegeta sacrifices himself in an attempt to defeat Buu. However these efforts are in vain, as Buu regenerates, after Vegeta dies from the aftershock of his attack. In a last ditch effort to save the world, Goku along with the help of Piccolo, teaches Trunks and Goten Fusion, a technique that allows the two children to fuse into a more powerful warrior, Gotenks. Gotenks battles Buu multiple times but even when he transforms into a Super Saiyan 3 Gotenks' power is not enough to defeat Buu and he is eventually absorbed by Buu, making Buu stronger. Goten and Trunks are eventually rescued from Buu by Vegeta and Goku but they are killed after Buu destroys the Earth. Goten is later brought back to life along with the rest of the Earth via the Dragon Balls in order to give energy to Goku's Super Spirit Bomb attack, which defeats Buu. Goten then returns to a normal life on Earth.

In Dragon Ball GT, Goten particates in battles against other fictional supervillains such as the space parasite Baby, the artificial human Super 17 and the evil dragon, Omega Shenron.

Abilities
Goten has many abilities that he has displayed throughout the series. Like many other characters in the series, Goten can shoot basic chi energy blasts as well perform Bukû-jutsu, a technique that allows the user to fly.
One of his more powerful abilities is the Kamehameha, a technique that concentrates chi energy and forms it into a beam. Goten first displays this technique during the 25th Martial Arts Tournament.

Goten also has the ability of Fusion, a technique that allows him to combine with a being of similar power and stature. Goten uses this technique many times over the series with Trunks to combine into Gotenks.

Goten has also displayed the ability to transform into a Super Saiyan, which changes his hair color a light shade of gold and boosts his power immensely. Unlike many other saiyans in the series, Goten was able to reach this form at a very early age. The first transformation happened while training with his mother, for which he was called a "monster", much to Goten's confusion.

Appearances in other media
Goten has appeared in various such as Dragon Ball Z: Budokai 2. In many of these games, the character Gotenks is also a playable character.

Goten has appeared in Dragon Ball Z movies #10, #11, #12, and #13. In two of the films, he fought the fabled Legendary Super Saiyan Broly.

Hi!!
I'm a huge Goten fan so I couldn't pass up reading this, but there were a few minor errors and such that I feel I should address.
1: the heading. It says "(Son Goten) is a fictional character from the created by Akira Toriyama." Shouldn't it say "created by Akira Toriyama"?
2: Goten first appeared in the Saiyaman saga. That was before the tournament and the Majin Buu saga.
3: Just a note for "Creation and Conception" Goten was conceived shortly before Goku's fight with Cell.
4: Under "Appearance" it says that Goten changed his appearance at the end of the Majin Buu saga, but really that didn't happen until ten years AFTER the Majin Buu saga. And his shirt didn't read "Son Goten", it read "Goten Son". Same thing, I know, but his surname was unmistakably printed last on his shirt. And another note: Goten was first trained by his mother, ChiChi, while his older brother went to school.
5: The "Family Tree" section is blank? Well, Goten's (adoptive) great grandfather was named Gohan. He's the one who found Gotens father in the mountains when he was a baby.
Goten's paternal grandfather was a low
class Saiya-jin (Saiyan) warrior named Bardock, who on a purging mission was given the power to see the future.
His maternal grandfather (Gyu Mao) was the tyrant Ox King who repented and became a good man.
Goten had one uncle; his father's older brother, Raditz, who was a first class Saiya-jin (Saiyan) warrior.
Goten's father, Kakarrot, who most know as Goku, is the series' protagonist and the greatest hero the Earth has ever known.
His mother, ChiChi, was the daughter of the Ox King and powerful fighter in her youth.
Goten has one sibling, and older brother named Gohan (named after said adoptive great grandfather) who tries to give up Martial Arts for the sake of studying, but something always happens to pull him back into the fire. Poor Gohan.
Goten has a sister-in-law, his brother's wife, named Videl. She is the daughter of Mister Satan (Hercule) who was the reigning world champion of Martial Arts. (thanks to the real heroes, or course)
Pan is Goten's niece, daughter of Gohan and Videl.
Goten has a girlfriend named Palace. She is also known as Valese or Paresu.
6: There are many of Goten's abilities that have been left out....but I don't feel like listing them all right now.. ^ ^'
And 7: It says, "Goten has appeared in various such as Dragon Ball Z: Budokai 2." Appeared in various WHAT? Was the word "games" supposed to have been inserted between "various" and "such"?

Well, that's all the things I spotted. Not trying to sound like a know-it-all or anything, I'm just a huge Goten fan (like I said) and I feel that if anyone else reads this they should get ALL the information. ..not that I have ALL the information.. TT_TT I can dream..
But anyway, thanks for your time. ^ ^
