SUMMARY


W. Dan Hausel, martial artist, artist, writer, public speaker and geologist has contributed to 72 books and published more than 550 popular and scientific papers and articles. He has been awarded several national and international awards for his work in geology and martial arts including induction into 14 Halls of Fame. His research in geology resulted in discovery of several diamond deposits, gold, and colored gemstones including two of the largest colored gemstone deposits on earth. As a martial artist, he was awarded Grandmaster (World Head) of Seiyo Shorin-Ryu Karate in 1999 and awarded 10th degree black belt in 2004.

BIOGRAPHY


W. Dan Hausel was born in Salt Lake City in 1949 and attended school at Nibley Park Elementary, Irving Jr High, South High School and the University of Utah. He received confirmation at Redeemer Lutheran Church. In 1964, he began training in karate at the Black Eagle Federation in Sugarhouse and continues training and teaching martial arts in Gilbert, Arizona. Since 1964, he earned certifications in 18 martial arts, 8 black belts, and was promoted to the highest rank possible in Okinawa Shorin-Ryu Karate.

His career as a geologist began at the University of Utah. After graduating with a BS in Geology in 1972 and MS in Geology in 1974, he attended the University of New Mexico, worked for numerous mining companies as a consultant and was employed as a research geologist at the Wyoming Geological Survey at the University of Wyoming for nearly 30 years.

As a research geologist and consultant, he specializes in diamond deposits, colored gemstones, precious metals, and ancient rocks. During the past 30 years, he discovered several diamond, gold, and colored gemstone deposits and some nickel, copper, cobalt, platinum and palladium occurrences. Two of the deposits are considered world-class colored gemstone deposits. He is a prolific writer and has authored >550 papers, books & maps, contributed to 72 books, & presented >400 lectures as keynote or invited speaker. He also produced geological maps of >700 mi2 of complex geological terrain.

For contributions in geology, he was presented the American Association of Petroleum Geologist's President's Award, was the recipient of the Education Award and inducted into the 2001 National Rock Hound & Lapidary Hall of Fame; presented the Wyoming Geological Association’s ‘Distinguished Service Award’, the Archimedes’s Award of Geological Sciences.

In 1999, he received certification as Grandmaster (Soke) of Seiyo No Shorin-Ryu Karate Kobudo Kai and awarded 10th degree black belt in 2004, placing him as the highest ranked martial artist in Seiyo Shorin-Ryu karate in the world. He was awarded 2004 Instructor of the Year, 2003 International Grandmaster of the Year, 2002 Grandmaster of the Year & 2001 International Instructor of the Year, inducted into 14 Halls of Fame, awarded 1996 Man of the Year & 1997 International Man of the Year.

Significant discoveries & Achievements


1978-79 Mapped the Wyoming portion of the Colorado-Wyoming State Line district & discovered several diamondiferous kimberlite intrusives.

1980 Discovered the Radichal kimberlite intrusive.

1981 Discovered significant gold mineralization in the Seminoe Mountains greenstone belt, Wyoming.

1982 Discovered significant gold mineralization in the Rattlesnake Hills greenstone belt, Granite Mountains, Wyoming.

1985-89 Mapped eight 7.5-minute quadrangles of the South Pass greenstone belt & identified dozens of significant gold anomalies.

1988-89 Mapped significant alteration zones and gold mineralization associated with the Donlin Creek – Snow Gulch disseminated gold deposit, Alaska. This is currently (2003) recognized as the largest undeveloped gold deposit in North America.

1990-91 Mapped the Seminoe Mountains greenstone belt & discovered gold, zinc, lead & 'kimberlitic' indicator mineral anomalies.

1992-93 Mapped of the Rattlesnake Hills greenstone belt & associated epithermal & exhalitive gold mineralization.

1993-94 Mapped the Cooper Hill mining district, Wyoming (1:12,000 scale).

1995 Discovered significant Ni and Pd anomaly associated with Cu-Co-Au-Pt-Pd mineralization in the Puzzler Hill layered complex, Wyoming.
Discovered a gem-quality sapphire, ruby, kyanite and iolite deposit at Palmer, Canyon, Wyoming. Recovered the largest gem iolite in the world at that time (1,750 carats).

1997 Discovered gem-quality peridot in the Leucite Hills, Wyoming.

1997-99 Discovered several kimberlites in the Iron Mountain district, Wyoming, and produced a 1:24,000 scale map of the district.

2003 Mapped one of the largest opal deposits in North America in central Wyoming.

2004 Identified one of the richest iolite-kyanite gemstone deposits in the world at Grizzly Creek, Wyoming. Recovered the largest iolite gem in the world at 24,150 carats.

2005 Recognized significant colored gemstone deposit in southern Laramie Range. Estimated potential resource of 2.4 trillion carats of iolite based on past sampling.
