Understanding Apples is the first collection of nonfiction short pieces, written by Appalachian writer JS Moore, and published in 2006. ISBN 9781598009750 ISBN 1598009753

The stories, mostly set in and around Kingsport, Tennessee, are about everything from religion, bootlegging, and superstition to mythology and the true origin of the cocktail drink Long Island Iced Tea. The Preface was written by Michael J. Burns of Buffalo, New York.

One of the short stories called "Breaking the Skin" first appeared in the British Literary magazine Delivered in 2005.
