Thomas W. Carey

Thomas W. Carey is a lawyer, drunk driving awareness activist, and adjunct professor at Stetson University College of Law. He is the founding partner of the law firm of Carey & Leisure in Clearwater, FL and is credited for establishment and leadership of drunk driving awareness organizations in Florida including Mothers Against Drunk Driving and Remove Intoxicated Drivers after his wife was killed in a tragic drunk driving accident in 1983. Carey was the first male chairman for the Florida state chapter of Mothers Against Drunk Driving from 1984-1985. Carey specializes in personal injury law and has been lead counsel in a large number of cases involving victims of drunk driving.
Education
Carey received an A.B. from Georgetown University in 1972, a J.D. from Suffolk University Law School in 1978, and an LL.M. from New York University in 1979.
Drunk Driving Awareness Advocacy. Carey co-founded the chapter of Remove Intoxicated Drivers (RID) in the Tampa Bay area. The firm has represented over 15,000 injured victims in West Florida.
In his law practice, Carey often represents claimants in personal injury cases involving DUI accidents.
Teaching
Carey is adjunct professor of Trial Practice at Stetson University College of Law, where he teaches courses in funeral home and cemetery malpractice, the Dram Shop Act, "Medical School for Lawyers" and "Law School for Physicians". The Carey & Florin courtroom at the Stetson University College of Law was named for Carey in 1994. Carey received the Distinguished Service Award from Stetson in 2011.
