Biography

Patricia spent fifteen years working as an accountant in the energy sector before moving into not-for-profit and community social justice work. For seven years, Pat was involved with the Calgary Cerebral Palsy Association, including two years as President and served four years as Director with the Cerebral Palsy Associations in Alberta. She developed a great understanding of the not-for-profit sector and those who are vulnerable in society. Having raised sons with physical challenges and diverse educational needs, Pat knows the strengths and weaknesses of our health care and education systems. In 1996, the Cerebral Palsy Associations in Alberta presented Pat with the Presidents Award. The past seven years, Pat served on the Town of Cochrane's Accessibility Advisory Council analyzing public development permit applications for accessibility. With a group of friends and community members, she organized, fundraised, and built a barrier-free park in East Cochrane.

Pat has a deep commitment to understanding and respecting cultural diversity and through her study of world religions and Spanish at university, her work encouraging Aboriginal/non-Aboriginal interaction and communication, the co-sponsorship of a refugee family through her church, hosting youth from Bolivia, Guatemala and the Canada World Youth program, and work with the United Church of Canada on justice and global partnerships, she instilled in her children and those around her a sense of the world as a global village and the need to understand the far-reaching impact of our decisions.

With a love of the outdoors, Pat became a Canadian Ski Patroller, both Alpine at Fortress Mountain and Nordic/Biathlon at all major ski centres in the foothills and mountains. Pat especially enjoyed her time preparing for and working at the 1988 Winter Olympic Games Nordic/Biathlon events in Canmore.

Pat enjoys playing piano, reading, various outdoor pursuits, attending cultural events in the region and spending family time with her three sons, Tristen Cones, Nigel Cones, and Scott Rairdan.
