Schumann is a trained nurse and she has studied journalism, and since 2008 she has studied and worked as a research assistant for chairman Franz Müntefering in the parliamentary office in the Bundestag. She writes for the SPD-sheet "Forward". <ref name20090924Aftenposten /><ref name20090506Bild />
She comes from Herne in (North Rhine-Westphalia).
