List of Roman Catholic clergy charged with sex offenses is a compilation of events in which priests and others in leadership within the Roman Catholic Church have been formally accused by a government official of having committed a criminal sex offense. Those events in which Roman Catholic clergy were convicted of criminal sex offenses also are noted below. Clergy abuse in African-American churches of all denominations is considered to be vastly underreported. According to David Clohessy, National Director of the Chicago-based Survivors Network of those Abused by Priests, "It is much more widespread than any of us want to believe. All sexual abuse is underreported. We believe clergy sex abuse more than most and clergy sex abuse in the minority communities is even less reported." The John Jay Report, commissioned by the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops, found accusations against 4,392 priests in the USA, equalling about 4% of all U.S. priests. Brazil *Felix Barbosa Carreiro arrested and charged with pedophilia in the northeastern state of Maranhão after police seized him in a hotel room with four teenage boys, still on trial Canada Estonia Croatia * — convicted in 2000 for sexual abuse of 37 young girls, sentenced to three years in prison, but later Croatian Supreme Court reduced sentence to 1,5 years in case he commits such crime again * - detained and later sentenced (in 2007) to three years in prison for sexually abusing 5 boys (10-12yrs). Czech Republic France *Francois Lefort — convicted, sentenced to 8 years in prison . India *Simon Palanthingal — charged in the USA Ireland *Eugene Greene - Jailed in 2000 for abusing children, many of them his altar boys, in County Donegal, over a period of three decades . New Zealand *Bernard McGrath - sentenced to five years imprisonment. United Kingdom *Edmund Cotter — convicted. *David Murphy - convicted United States *Michael Edwin Wempe, self-confessed pedophile whom Cardinal Roger Mahony said he regretted returning to the ministry, sentenced to three years in prison
