Jae Bryson (born May 28, 1962) is an American author. Current work A native of Davenport, Iowa, Bryson graduated from Assumption High School. He went on to attend Southern Illinois University-Carbondale; California State University, Los Angeles and the University of Southern California's Master of Professional Writing program. There, he studied under Paul Gillette, author of Play Misty For Me. Bryson wrote the book Playing for Paterno, which chronicles the exploits of Tony and Charlie Pittman, who both played football for Joe Paterno at Penn State. The Pittmans are the only known father-son Division I football players to start for the same coach and be undefeated as starters (45-0-1). Bryson also was a contributor for the book Teen Agers From the Future a compilation of articles about the DC Comics super-group the Legion of Super Heroes. Bryson is currently working on a screenplay version of Playing for Paterno. Early works Bryson was a reporter for various organizations and worked for several years as a freelance writer. He held positions at the Star Tribune (Minnesota), Colors magazine, Quad-City Times (Iowa) and Minnesota Public Radio. Bryson was represented in the 1990s by Marie Brown Associates, a literary agency based in New York City, for his manuscript, "Nigger: The Weight of a Word". That manuscript, considered controversial at the time, was reviewed by five potential publishers, but all declined. Interviewees for the book included authors Quincy Troupe and Nikki Giovanni, musicians George Clinton, Sonny Sharrock and Vernon Reid and many others. Years later, Harvard professor Randall Kennedy's book, "Nigger: The Strange Career of a Troublesome Word" was published and Bryson dropped the project to concentrate on others. Media ownership Bryson is the co-owner of a media group in the Twin Cities (Minnesota). Black Heart Inc., has been in operation since 2002 and publishes One Nation News newspaper and Business Nation magazine in addition to electronic publications JobHeart, One Week, One for Homes and One Healthy Nation.
