Figurenude

Print E-mail
A neologism for an object of two dimensional art primarily of a nude human figure. A "figurenude" is not intentionally erotic and does not involve the subject interacting with the viewer, except possibly a casual look. The face is often not shown. ("Figurenude" was a term first used by Curtis Neeley for photographs, but can be anything two-dimensional.)

This neologism is a sub-class of the nude art genre that attempts to completely separate art from erotica. Many "art nudes" are "figurenudes" but no "art erotica" is a "figurenude".

Although it is a neologism is has been widely accepted by many of the best photographers of the nude photograph of the recent turn-of-the-century. You can see its first widely accepted use and the art of many of those who first accepted it at at

Figurenude: [fig-yer - nood] -n- An object of two dimensional art with a nude human figure making up about one quarter of the surface area and is not intentionally erotic. It does not involve the subject interacting with anyone or the face of the nude more the half-lit or as a prominent feature. The nude human form presented is revealed as an object of art and not a person with reference to his or her social relationships and behavioral patterns. It is often a term applied to photographs, but can be anything two-dimensional.
(They are usually photographs, but are sometimes paintings, drawings or sketches)

-A figurenude is a sub-class of the nude art genre. A photograph, painting, or other can be a nude and it can be a figure piece and still not fall within this very specific division of art. It can be made more clear by describing what it is not - as follows.
A figurenude is NOT for medical purposes.
A figurenude is NOT done in an attempt to create lust. They can be sensual, but a figurenude can NOT be intentionally erotic.
A figurenude does NOT involve the figure as anything but an object of art. The identity of the model is at best barely revealed.
A figurenude is two dimensional. Sculpture, pottery, carving, etc. are not figurenude images.
A figurenude is NOT vulgar or obscene. PORNOGRAPHY is relative to a viewer's standards. Some feel that all nudes are PORN!
A figurenude involves a NUDE human figure.

-adj- - A representation of a nude human created for the purpose of being an art object. Figurenude art is about form and lighting a human object of art and is not about seeing an attractive person naked. Some images that were often called "simple nudes" on the Internet at the dawn of the 21st century were figurenude art. Most of the photographs they presented were not figurenude art.
Eye contact and a smile is NOT a figurenude.
See why Ruth Bernhard avoided that in an interview
with Photovision Magazine when she was only 96.
