Carl Mondragon

Carl Mondragon (born 1958 - , Embudo, New Mexico) is an American photographer who specializes in the photography of landscapes, wildlife, astrophotography, architecture, modeling, commercial photography, electron microscopy and advertising.
Biography
Mondragon built his first telescope by hand at the age of 14. At the age of 15, he began climbing all of the mountains in Colorado over 14,000 feet in elevation. This goal took him over 13 years to achieve (there are 54 in total).
After growing up in Pueblo, Colorado, Mondragon earned his B.S., Electrical Engineering from the University of Southern Colorado. His engineering work included semiconductor photolithography processing where he co-developed the Transputer parallel microprocessor.
Mondragon is self-taught in photography and uses five different film formats from 35mm to 8x20.
Early in his career, Mondragon developed all of his film and made all of his prints in his B&W and color darkroom. He now uses a Heidelberg D8400 Drum scanner to digitize his film and a digital enlarger - the Epson 11880 wide format archival printer. He also uses a 35 mm Leica, 6x6 Hasselblad, 6x8 Fuji, 4x5 Toyo and 8x10 Arca Swiss. Mondragon exposes, develops, scans, retouches and prints all of his work in his own facilities. He is able to create prints ranging in size from 13" x 19" to 64" x 140".
He opened the Mondragon Gallery of Art on the Pearl Street Mall in Boulder, CO in 2004. His gallery was highlighted in the Daily Camera newspaper His gallery operated until 2006 when he moved to Utah with his son. Now living back in Colorado, Mondragon displays his work in various locations, including the Earthwood Gallery in Boulder, UBS Financial Services in Boulder, and St. Francis de Assisi gift shop in Taos, NM. Carl was selected by Photo Techniques Magazine as "Serious Photographer" for 2009.
Mondragon founded the non-profit Eco Imagery and his current major project is photographing endangered UNESCO World Heritage Sites utilizing large format film. He continues to teach and lecture on the art of large format and large film photography and travels both internationally and within Colorado.
