Baghdad Poker

Print E-mail
Baghdad Poker (aka Battlefield) is a variation of poker that combines the ideas of a mosh pit, 5-card stud, 7-card no peekey and a crazy card. Bombs make this a high risk game of chance, involving many round of betting. The lesser know poker game is overshadowed by the booming popularity of Texas Hold'em, but is rising in popularity as well.
How to Play
Traditional playing cards are spread out into a circular mosh pit in the middle of the table called the battlefield. Players antie and draw one card from the battlefield without looking at it. Card is put off to the side and kept face down. This becomes the players crazy card and cannot be turned over until the end of the game. Player to the left of the dealer draws a card from the battlefield and sets it face up in front of him for all to see. Player now has the best poker hand showing and leads the first round of betting. Next player continues to flip cards until his hand is the stongest on the table, then leads the next round of betting. Pattern continues around the table. Each player draws a maximum of five cards. When players have drawn all five cards there will be a final round of betting and the remaining players reveil their crazy card. Best five card hand wins.
Rules
*If a player draws a bomb, player is "blown up" and hand is folded.
*Player will be safe from bombs if in possesion of a bomb detector or Private Pile.
*Private Pile is only good for one bomb.
*Bomb detectors last the entire game.
*Player will be given a second life if they get blow up and their crazy card is the Nurse or the Cognizant.

*The Cognizant leaves you protected from bombs for the remainder of the game and makes the bomb a wild card. However, you will "die" and have your hand folded if you draw the ace of spades after being saved from the Cognizant.
*If a player draws the TTT, the hand is "Time Traveled" and re-started from the begining. Money stays in the pot.
*Player will be ammune from the TTT and keep his current hand if in possesion of the Chronon Cloak.
Card Values
*Clubs are worthless toward your poker hand, with noted exceptions.
*Eights are bombs, except eight of clubs.
*Eight of clubs is a wild card and bomb detector.
*Tens are bomb detectors.
*The six of clubs is the TTT.
*The seven of clubs is the Chronon Cloak.
*The jack of clubs is Private Pile.
*The queen of clubs is the Nurse.
*The king of clubs is the Cognizant.
Crazy Card
The Crazy Card is draw by each player at the begining of every hand. Player is not allowed to to look at their crazy card until after the final round of betting, unless player chooses to pay the peekey fee of $2.00 or whatever insurance rate is set by the dealer. After blowing up you may flip your crazy card to see if you will be saved. If your crazy card is the TTT, it will only be effective at the end of the game.
Variations
Baghdad poker is a game of variations. Dealer has freedom to create their own variations.
Baghdad Baseball
Most popular variation of Baghdad. Baghdad Baseball combines the game of Baghdad with traditional "Baseball Poker" rules. These rules inculde the Ted Williams Rule that makes all nines wild cards. The walk rule states that if any four is drawn player is awarded a bonus card. If a player draws a three then player strikes out his hand is folded. If dealer declairs the Bonds Rule is in effect, any two or five protects a player from striking out and turns any three into a wild card.
Death March Baghdad
High risk variation of Baghdad. In Death March Baghdad no player can win until he has sucessfully "made it throught the battlefield" by drawing all five cards from the mosh pit and flipping his crazy card without blowing up or striking out. In the event that the player doesn't make it, the pot will be split among all players.
History
Baghdad Poker started as a Middle Eastern drinking game. It became a popular family game in the US and has recently got it's start in public card clubs. Most notably Artichoke Joe's card club in California.
